Joseph Lyons Walrond

1752 - 1815

Biography

A slave-owner in Antigua, dying in Britain in 1815, father of Bethell Walrond (q.v.).

  1. Son of Maine Swete Walrond of Antigua, matriculated St John's Oxford 06/07/1770 aged 18, fellow 1770-1772 [sic], of Dulford House Devon, died 13/01/1815.

  2. Will of Joseph Lyons Walrond of Grosevenor Place Middlesex proved 08/05/1815. He had agreed and an annuity of 拢2100 p.a. for his wife Caroline should she survive him, 拢1500 p.a. payable from his estates in Antigua and 拢600 p.a. from the interest on 拢20,000 which he had settled in trust on his marriage. She in turn had determined to renounce 拢500 p.a. of this settlement, and in his will Walrond accordingly reaffirmed the 拢600 p.a. from the settled 拢20,000 and provided in addition 拢1000 p.a. from the dividends 'of my property in the public funds' [implying capital of at least 拢30,000 in these public funds], 'so that her mind might be more at ease in case of failure of my estates in the West Indies.' He left the rest of his estate in trust to provide '拢30,000 3 per cent Imperial Annuities' to his second son Bethell Walrond provided Bethell lived until 01/01/1825, half to be paid to him on that day and the other half to be paid either then if Caroline Walrond were already dead or on her decease if later; the remainder of his estate was to pass to Joseph Lyons Walrond's oldest son Lyons Walrond, again provided that he lived until 01/02/1823 [he in fact died in 1819, and the combined inheritance passed to Bethell Walrond].
