Son of William Cross, Glasgow West India merchant and proprietor (himself the son of John Cross, also a West India merchant and proprietor) and Anna Buchanan, heiress of Moss and Auchintoshan. Owner of Montreuil Estate in Grenada. Auchintoshan House in Old Kilpatrick Dumbartonshire was sold for 拢20,000 by John Cross Buchanan's trustees after his death. Held shares in John Cross & Co., West India merchants.
