Sharanya Vaidyanathan – LLM 2015

How would you describe your learning experience at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø?Ìý

I pursued my LLM with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Laws from 2014-15, and was greatly advantaged by the best in-class education that Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø provides its students. It is indeed a great privilege to be a part of one of the most ancient and coveted educational institutions, which has educatedÌýnumerous luminaries. I look back at the year I spent at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø with nothing but fond memories and always wished that the Master's programmeÌýwas longer, sinceÌýthe year goes by so swiftly!

Why did you choose to study the general LLM programme?

I chose not to specialise in a particular legal field, and applied for the general LLM programme.ÌýThis allowedÌýflexibility to choose modules from a wide range of subjects, giving me the opportunity to also interact with tutors and lecturers whoÌýexcelÌýin their chosen area of research.

What advice would you give toÌýcurrent students at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø?Ìý

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø has given me a treasure trove of unforgettable memories and experiences that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The advice I’d give to current LLM students would be to make the best of every moment at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and during your stay in the incrediblyÌývibrant city of London.

There are plenty of opportunities when it comes to volunteering and part time jobs, if you have some spare time in between classes. London is a breathtaking city - I'd advise students to take some time to travel around the country and see plays and theatres shows, as these experiences are priceless!Ìý

What kind of resources or opportunities would you encourage students to try out?Ìý

The library resources that are offered to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø students areÌýdefinitely something that you should try to take advantage of. There are various student support organisations that not only help you connect withÌývolunteering activities but also provideÌýcareer advice and conduct workshops that you can be part of. There are a number of societies that help you nurture your hobbies or enable you to find one. These social interactions are vital inÌýhelping one to develop, andÌýprovideÌýnetworking and social opportunities which might open doors for future relationships and growth.

Did you take part in any extra-curricular activitiesÌýduring your time at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø?Ìý

I had an opportunity to volunteer for The Times Final Year Student Survey, where I interviewed final year students and conducted surveys. This not only helped me sharpen my communication skills butÌýalso gave me an insight into the different views that peers and studentsÌýinÌýthe same year can have aboutÌýtheir time at university.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of studying at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø?Ìý

If you're thinking of studying at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Laws, I'd say: your study at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø will undoubtedly be an enriching experience that willÌýprepare you for the real world. Pursuing a Master's degree at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø willÌýbe an absolute privilege --ÌýI can say, without any hesitation, that my year at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø is and will be by far the best year of my life!

What have you gone on to do since graduating?Ìý

After graduating, I pursued a career in litigation, and I am currently a practising Advocate in India -ÌýspecialisingÌýin corporate laws, maritime dispute resolution and arbitration.
