Online Dutch Courses

Study Dutch courses online with a Personal Tutor at beginner, intermediate or advanced level.

Enrolment is continuous: you can start your course the week after you've signed up.Ìý

We offer five teacher-supported online language courses for learners of Dutch, the official language of the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders):Ìýtwo courses for beginners, two courses for intermediate learners and one course for advanced students. ÌýWe also offer a comprehensive language course teachingÌýMedical DutchÌýand two tutor-supported distance courses teaching reading skills in specialized forms of Dutch, i.e.ÌýEarly Modern DutchÌýandÌýBusiness Dutch.Ìý

One-to-One

All Dutch language courses are fully delivered from distance, open to learners anywhere in the world and taught online on a one-to-one basis,Ìýi.e. every student is taught individually via a video-conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, MS Teams etc)Ìýby his or her personal tutor.ÌýThe courses are flexible and can be adapted to meet students' needs also to allow for other commitments, such as work, studies or family. You decide whether your private online teaching sessions or classes take place in the day time or the evening - for every class, you agree with your tutor on a day and time that suits both you and your teacher. All course materials are accessible online and downloadable and all your exercises and tasks are corrected by your personal tutor.

Levels

InÌýBeginners 1 and Beginners 2Ìýyou learn the skills you need to speak, read, write and understand basic Dutch in a range of practical everyday contexts. No previous knowledge of Dutch is required for Beginners 1. For Beginners 2 you need to have completed Beginners 1 or have a starting level of Dutch comparable to level A1 as defined by the Council of Europe (CEFR). The learning outcomes for Beginners 1 are equivalent to level A1, and to level A2 for Beginners 2. The Beginners courses are an excellent preparation for the Basisexamen Inburgering (Dutch Civic Integration Examination)

Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2 consolidate the knowledge of Dutch you already have and extend your language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing on an intermediate level. In the courses you also study the culture of Dutch and Flemish societies. Intermediate 1 is for students who have successfully completed Beginners 2 or who have a similar linguistic standard, equivalent to level A2. To take Intermediate 2 you need to have completed Intermediate 1 or have a level B1. The learning outcomes for Intermediate 1 are equivalent to level B1, and to level B2 for Intermediate 2. The Intermediate courses allow you to reach the language standard required to take the Dutch NT2 Staatsexamens Nederlands als Tweede Taal (Dutch as a Second Language) or the Belgian (Flemish) Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (Certificate Dutch as a Foreign Language).

Advanced 1Ìýwhich is taught entirely in Dutch, further develops your language skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking on an advanced and academic level (C1). The course is also geared to further expanding your knowledge of the history and culture of the Netherlands and Belgium. It is aimed at students who have completed Intermediate 2 or who have a similar language standard, comparable to level B2.Ìý

The Early Modern Dutch Reading Skills Course is designed to give you the skills you need to readÌý16th, 17th and 18th-century Dutch and Flemish texts (i.e. the original language of the Dutch Golden Age).ÌýThe course is open to learners with both prior or no knowledge of Dutch.

The Business Dutch Reading Skills Course enables you to build up a readingÌýknowledge of Dutch sufficient to cope with reading the business pages of Dutch and Flemish newspapers and magazines. It can be taken by learners with no or a minimal knowledge of the language.

The Medical Dutch CourseÌýis aimed at health professionals intending to work or study in the Netherlands or Belgium. The course requires a starting level of Dutch equivalent to B1 CEFR.
