The centre will launch in an online event that sees CEPEO Director Professor Lindsey Macmillan introduce the centre, highlight its mission, talk about what the centre鈥檚 research achieves, and why this matters. Professor Macmillan will also present new research for the Social Mobility Commission, showing differences in opportunities across England, and emphasising the importance of both education and the labour market in equalising opportunities.

Professor Robert D. Putnam, Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University, will join the event to talk about his forthcoming book 鈥楾he Upswing鈥�, and discuss the challenges of delivering practical policy research to tackle unequal opportunities with Professor Macmillan.

CEPEO produces practical policy research to design and inform evidence-led education policy to improve life chances for disadvantaged people across the life course.

鈥淲e are one of the most unequal countries in the developed world, in terms of outcomes and opportunities. Our mission as a research centre is to inform evidence-led policy to equalise opportunities at every stage in life, from birth through to adulthood. We bring together expertise from economics, education, psychology, and social statistics to produce accessible research that improves life chances,鈥� said Professor Macmillan.

The centre, which launched online in February 2020, has already provided significant analysis of COVID-19-related impacts on education policy, particularly around the use of predicted grades. It had produced 7 briefing notes and 15 working papers to date to help to inform policy makers and wider stakeholders on key issues around equalising opportunities.
