What Works for Children's Social Care is focused on developing evidence-informed practice in England鈥檚 children鈥檚 social care sector. It is funded by the Department for Education and is part of the What Works Network (other members including the Education Endowment Foundation and the Early Intervention Foundation).

The membership provides opportunities to IOE staff to bid for work running evaluations of projects funded by What Works for Children鈥檚 Social Care to improve the outcomes of children, young people and families who come into contact with the social care system.

Acceptance to the Panel recognises the IOE鈥檚 expertise regarding work in this area and in carrying out complex impact and process evaluation research. This includes the recent work by Gabriella Conti in the Department of Social Science to estimate the economic cost of child mistreatment in the UK, which also draws on the National Child Development Study hosted by the IOE鈥檚 Centre for Longitudinal Studies.

What Works for Children鈥檚 Social Care鈥檚 core mission is to provide high quality evidence on whether programmes and interventions can improve outcomes, so the sector can ensure that children, young people and families receive the best, most appropriate services possible.

Dr Jake Anders, Deputy Director in the Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities, who led the IOE鈥檚 application to join the panel, said 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited about the opportunity to get involved in the important work being funded by What Works for Children鈥檚 Social Care and delighted that they recognise the IOE鈥檚 commitment to high quality research and evaluation in this area.鈥�
