Stakeholders’ consultation at the Swahili Cultural Centre in Mombasa, Kenya, 12 June 2024

Stakeholders’ consultation at the Swahili Cultural Centre in Mombasa, Kenya, 12 June 2024

Michelle Liebst and Saadu Hashim of Fort Jesus Museum organized a consultation with representatives of Mombasa-based groups connected in various ways to the past that will be evoked in the exhibition “East African Voices Against Slavery” hosted by Fort Jesus Museum and Heritage Centre from 12 September 2024. Local curators, community leaders, descendants of Liberated Africans whose voices will be included in the exhibition, Christian and Islamic moral authorities, and contemporary antislavery activists participated in the consultation and provided feedback on early versions of the exhibition’s texts and images. They expressed interest in the exhibition’s ideas and made suggestions. Their feedback was collected by AFRAB’s junior researchers Maxwell Kibet and Thomas Kadenge, who are preparing the exhibition under the supervision of curator Saadu Hashim and the Fort Jesus team.
