Johanna Dale publishes new co-edited collection: ‘Political Liturgies in the High Middle Ages'

30 April 2022

Congratulations to Johanna Dale who, with Paweł Figurski (Warsaw) and Pieter Byttebier (Ghent), has just published an edited collection of essays entitled ‘Political Liturgies in the High Middle Ages: Beyond the Legacy of Ernst H. Kantorowicz’.

Johanna Dale book

The collection builds on the legacy of influential medievalist Kantorowicz to explore the interaction between politics and religion in the high Middle Ages, examining the many different ways in which liturgical events and activities influenced medieval political communities across Europe. The high Middle Ages have traditionally been seen as a time when the importance of liturgy to political communities waned, yet this collection of essays clearly demonstrates the continued centrality of liturgy to political communities large and small in the period. It also highlights the huge variety of sources that can shed light on the liturgical life of communities, from liturgical texts themselves, through manuscripts, chronicles and relic lists to material culture, including liturgical objects and clothing.

Dale’s own contribution draws on her British Academy funded research within the department, examining inventories from medieval St Paul’s Cathedral to uncover the intermingling of political and religious messaging in the Bishop of London’s liturgical clothing.
