Pantheon 2: Towards an HIV self-testing implementation action framework and tool-kit

Project Summary

HIV self-testing (HIVST) is when a person takes a sample (blood/saliva), runs the test and reads the result themselves. Previous studies have shown that HIVST is an acceptable and successful way to increase HIV testing in the UK. However, the best way to reach different populations and combine HIVST into existing HIV testing services remained unknown.

We aimed to improve access to HIVST for cisgender gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and transgender people in England and Wales. We used project data from previous studies on HIVST among MSM and trans people. It also involved talking to policymakers GBMSM community members to develop a plan for providing access to HIVST.

This research has created an implementation action framework to guide the provision of HIVST in England and Wales as an option to test for HIV. Short videos were also made for social media. This work will help increase access to HIV testing and improve the well-being of GBMSM and trans people in England and Wales.
