3 September 2019

As the 2019 cohort of civil engineering BEng and MEng students prepares to graduate, one of their number, Amarpreet Singh, reflects on his time at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø, graduation day itself, and what’s next in his nascent career.

I’ve just completed a MEng in civil engineering in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE), at the one and only Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø. I think starting university is your first step to joining the real world. For me it was quite a daunting experience networking, liaising and trying to build professional relationships. One thing that made my experience at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø more comfortable was having my CEGE family around me. From first year right through to fourth year, I was always able to discuss challenging experiences I was going through with other students, or pick up valuable advice through informal chats with staff members – who really do give genuine information and have your best interests at heart. This support network really allowed me to achieve my potential at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø.

One thing that is fantastic about Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø is the plethora of opportunities you are given. I was lucky enough to go to the University of British Columbia as an exchange student and live in Vancouver for a year! They have a world-renowned structures department, so I really got the chance to hone my technical skills. However, I was also able to try out snowboarding, hiking and mountain climbing; all things I never really saw myself doing, yet I have gone on two snowboarding trips since being back!

Now I’m finally graduating and really can’t wait. I haven’t seen my course mates since our last exam, so the day itself will be a nice reunion. After I graduate, I will be starting work as a Technology Consultant at Deloitte, and I’m really looking forward to beginning a new chapter in my life. I think studying civil engineering at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø has given me the skills - in critical thinking, teamwork, and how to thrive under pressure -Ìýto succeed in any direction I choose to go.
