Wednesday, 24 April 2024:听New national research centres to unlock tests and treatments for rare diseases

香港六合彩中特网 scientists will work to help thousands of people living with rare diseases get access to improved diagnostics, treatments and potentially cures, thanks to funding for four new research centres. A new 拢9.4million LifeArc Centre for Rare Respiratory Diseases will be co-led by听Professor Hannah Mitchison听(香港六合彩中特网 Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health) alongside academic partners in Edinburgh, Nottingham, Dundee, Cambridge, Southampton and the UKRI Nucleic Acid Therapy Accelerator (NATA) 鈥� with the aim of听uniting children, adults and families with clinical experts, researchers, investors and industry leaders.

The ECR EDI Focus Group at the GOS Institute of Child Health is organising a half-day long Career Day on to help you navigate different career routes. We are hosting 3 panels to discuss the academic route, non-academic route, and transition within non-research/teaching roles in academia. Speakers include recent fellowship recipients, those working in healthcare industry, and a range of non-academic careers at universities. There will be drinks and networking opportunity afterwards.

We would like to invite you to attend the 2023 Maria Bitner-Glindzicz Memorial Lecture, which is taking place as part of the 58th Inner Ear Biology Workshop, being held at ICH on Monday 4th September, 4pm 鈥� 5pm.

This year, Prof Jeff Holt, PhD and Dr Gwenaelle Geleoc, PhD from Harvard Medical School, Boston will be discussing 'Novel gene therapies for Usher Syndrome and non-syndromic hearing loss'.

This will be a hybrid event with the opportunity to attend in person or virtually via zoom. Please note if you are already attending the Inner Ear Biology Workshop then there is no need for you to sign up - please only register if you are not part of the workshop as in-person places are limited.

We would kindly ask attendees on site and (also virtually) to arrive on time to avoid disruptions.

Professor Dame Lyn Chitty听DBE PhD MRCOG, Professor of Genetics and Fetal Medicine, NIHR Senior Investigator Emeritus, Deputy Director NIHR GOSH Biomedical Research Centre, 香港六合彩中特网 Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, Genetics and Genomic Medicine Department.

We give warmest congratulations from the Department to Lyn, who was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the new year鈥檚 honours list, for her services to medicine.

Based at 香港六合彩中特网 and Great Ormond Street Hospital since the 1980s, Professor Chitty is the UK鈥檚 only Professor of Genetics and Fetal Medicine. She has pioneered research into rapid and non-invasive prenatal diagnosis, offering families lower risk options to find out about the health of their unborn child.

Professor Chitty is an expert in听prenatal diagnosis, the ultrasound screening of fetal abnormalities, specifically fetal skeletal abnormalities, and was responsible for the creation of the fetal size standards which have been used throughout the UK and beyond.听

She said:听鈥淚 am surprised and delighted to be awarded this honour. It is really amazing and I still can鈥檛 quite believe it, but I don鈥檛 believe one gets this level of recognition alone and for me it is very much a reflection of the great people and teams I have worked with over the years. My thanks goes to them for all the hard work and support they have given. This honour really is a reflection of great teamwork.鈥�
