10 July 2023

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's Centre for Integrative Anatomy is to field a team of speakers and participants at the International Society for Vertebrate Morphology Meeting in Cairns, Australia (#ICVM2023) during 28 July-01 August 2023

More than a dozen members and close associates of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's Centre for Integrative AnatomyÌý(CIA) will be flying to Cairns, Australia later this month to participate in the Ìý- the 13th to be held, so far.Ìý Between them, CIAÌýmembers will be contributing to at least 15 , and a few will be chairing some of the themed sessions.Ìý

The topics covered will beÌývaried and exciting, and diverse: bird (avian) neck evolution, lizard osteoderms (literally, bone/skin:ÌýbonyÌýdepositsÌýorÌýscales inÌýtheÌýskinÌýofÌýlizardsÌýand many otherÌýreptiles);ÌýredÌýsquirrelÌýdiets;ÌýfrogÌýlocomotion;Ìýlungfish feeding;Ìýbody-size in birds;Ìýsalamander evolution;Ìýstatistical quantification and categorisation ofÌýmovementÌý(locomotion);Ìýskull shape in ducks and chickens;Ìýbrain shape in river otters;Ìýand lower jaw evolution in amphibians, reptiles,ÌýbirdsÌýand mammals, to name but a few of the topics on offer.

The , chaired by an expert in the field.Ìý Example themes are:Ìý feeding, teeth and jaws;Ìýmass extinction and climate change;Ìýthe rise of mammals; movement; brain evolution and trauma; Paleolithic (2.5 million to 10,000 years ago)Ìýevolution & development;Ìýhearing, seeing, smelling; fish shapes (morphology) and fins; limbs and pseudo-limbs; the 'integumentary' skeletonÌý(i.e.Ìýskin, hair, scales, feathersÌýor cuticle);Ìýcranial (head-bones) evolution; land-water habitat changes; spines;Ìýinternal organs (viscera); and ventilation and breathing.

There will also be special sessions, separately dedicated to the legacies of Susan W Herring ('A Giant in her Field' - 3 parts) andÌýWalter J. Bock 1933-2022: Evolutionary Biologist, Functional MorphologistÌýand Science Organizer.

Members of the Centre for Integrative Anatomy (CIA), who will be speaking, work in many disciplines, and include:Ìý, Professor of Vertebrate Morphology and Palaeontology; ,ÌýProfessor of Biomedical Engineering (who is chairing two sessions, including one on the integumentary skeleton); and , (who is chairing the session on water-land-water transitions) and , all Associate Professors of Anatomy.Ìý Ìý

The CIA'sÌýwork involves collaboration with many from other institutions and associate organisations, such as: museums, e.g., the ÌýOxford University Museum of Natural History, National Museums Scotland, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, USA,ÌýFlorida Museum of Natural History, USA;Ìýother colleges of London University, e.g., Kings andÌýImperial;Ìýother Universities, e.g.,Ìýthose of Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, York, Guelph,ÌýCalifornia (UCAL) USA,ÌýMidwestern USA, Ohio USA,ÌýTuscon USAÌýand Washington USA; theÌýUniversity of Arizona Health Sciences; Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences; and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, France.
