Opportunities

The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Institute of Healthy Ageing (IHA) is a centre of excellence for research on the biology of ageing and ageing-related diseases. From time to time the laboratories at the IHA have PhD opportunities not linked to the larger PhD programs. Details of these and opportunities to join the IHA are contained on this page.

BSc Biological SciencesÌý

Biological Sciences is at the centre of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’s world-leading research on biodiversity and environmental science as well as human genetics, healthy ageing and many more. Many current research experts from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and our partner institutes are actively involved in the teaching of the BSc and MSci in Biological Sciences. Our staff have included Nobel Prize Winners, including 2014 winner and current staff member, John O’Keefe. Students are able to choose from one of seven different specialist degree options after years one and two including Computational Biology, Biodiversity and Conservation, Genetics and more

MRes Biosciences - Biology of Ageing and Age-Related Disease

The MRes in Biosciences will provide the opportunity to undertake a major research project and to develop the generic skills required for the written and verbal communication of science.ÌýThe programme is designed for students who wish to undertake a PhD degree or to convert from other relevant disciplines and for those who wish to enter employment in an advanced capacity in industry or the public sector in the field of Bioscience. Students can choose to graduate from one of twelve specialist areas including Biology of Ageing and Age-Related Diseases.

Summer Studentships

There are a number of summer studentships’ funding opportunities that students can apply for to jointly with a lab at the IHA. If you are interested please contact an IHA PI the December ahead of the summer you wish to work at the IHA.

Each year the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment offers a number of summer placement opportunities for undergraduate students.

Postgraduate opportunitiesÌý

GEE PhD Programme

The Department has a thriving postgraduate programme. It recruits 15-20 PhD students per annum from a variety of sources including Research Councils, Charity, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø schemes and a number of inter-disciplinary centres across Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø.

The Department is closely associated with a number of Doctoral Training Centres:ÌýÌý(Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology),ÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø-Birkbeck MRC Doctoral Training Programme,ÌýÌý(BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme) and theÌý.

The IHA also takes students from the Leonard Wolfson Training Programme for Neurodegeneration.Ìý

IHA Fellowships

There are two different processes for Fellowships at the IHA. The first is for Independent Fellowships. These are suitable for researchers with some postdoctoral experience who are ready to start up their own independent research programme.

The second is Short Term and Post Doctoral Fellowships. These are suitable for researchers who have recently completed a doctorate.

We always welcome enquiries from prospective Fellows, if you are interested in joining the IHA as a fellow please contact us to discuss possibilities.
