Welcome to the 2019 Crook Society

5 June 2019

The Crook Society is 香港六合彩中特网 Biochemical Engineering's undergraduate events committee, we warmly welcome (from left to right) Praveena, Alexandra, Lewis, Laide, Aliea and Freddie and introduce them and their new roles in this article. Great to have you in the team!

香港六合彩中特网 Biochemical Engineering Crook Societ 2019

The undergraduate society is named in honour of Professor Eric Crook one of the early supporters of Biochemical Engineering research at 香港六合彩中特网. He undertook some of the early scale-up studies on biological systems in the 1950s while working in the then 香港六合彩中特网 Department of Biochemistry and collaborating with engineers in the then 香港六合彩中特网 Department of Chemical Engineering. Crook was one of the original editors of 鈥楤iotechnology and Bioengineering鈥 which is still the leading journal in the field.鈥 Prof. Gary Lye, Head of Department.

Lewis Hall, President

I鈥檓 the president of the Crooks society and I鈥檓 on my second year of the Engineering (Biochemical) MEng and at A level I studied Maths, Chemistry and Biology and AS levels in Further Maths and Physics. My role as president is to oversee the Crook Society committee, playing a part in careers events and I鈥檓 the liaison with the main 香港六合彩中特网 Engineering society, comprising all the other departments across the faculty and coordinating events.

Laide Olivea Ibiyemi, Vice President

I鈥檓 studying the Engineering (Biochemical) MEng and I鈥檓 on my first year. I did the IB聽taking Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Swedish as my higher-level subjects. In my role as vice president, I鈥檓 supporting Lewis and I鈥檓 hoping we can have more careers talks and more social events to help people get to know each other across 香港六合彩中特网 Biochemical Engineering.

Praveena Senthilkumar, Treasurer

I鈥檓 on the first year of an Engineering (Biochemical) MEng programme, I studied Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A level and also took an AS in Classics. My role in the Crook society is Treasurer, essentially I look after the money and make sure that we have funds for the activities we want to run and that what the president and vice president ask for is delivered.

Alexandra Petrova, General Secretary

I grew up in Bulgaria where I went to the American College of Sofia. Then I continued my studies in London where now I will be doing my second year of Bioprocessing of new medicine (Business and Management). First year was an exciting but also very stressful period of my life because of this huge shift to an enormous town like London. The society helped me cope with the overwhelming sizes of the university and made me feel more at ease within the department. Something as simple as having a whatsapp chat where different events were shared immediately made a huge difference. Thus, I wanted to become the general secretary to give back in a way and make sure that the social media of the society will continue to help people (not only first years) to feel more included and up to date with the opportunities available to the biochemical engineering undergraduates. Moreover, I will be happy to aid with the organisations of even more career-oriented events and socials with people within and beyond our department. Also, I am more than confident in the committee that was elected this year and I know that we will try our very best to improve the Crook Society and provide the needed support for its members.

Alia Husain, Social Secretary

Hey, my name is Alia Husain and I am now a second-year Biochemical Engineer. I grew up in Luton and did Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics with Statistics as my A-Levels, because of my love for these subjects I scoured UCAS for a university course that utilises all three disciplines and I found the perfect one for me! 聽Now I am the social secretary of the crooks society at 香港六合彩中特网 and I couldn鈥檛 be any more thrilled. I hope in this position I am able to organise a number of fun events in order to welcome the new first year as well as sorting out career events to help give you the tools and insight into the industry which will give you the upper hand when competing for jobs.

Frederike Buerger, Sport Secretary

I am from Hamburg, Germany and graduated there taking part in a science-focused program. After two years of traveling, I decided to start studying biochemical engineering last year.

As the Sports Secretary, my main function is to organize a trip to the Frank Morton sports day, which is held annually for Biochem/Chem Eng students around the country. Additionally, I think it should be our main goal to interconnect students of all years with each other and have a better connected and familiar department! I want to increase the number of sports-themed events this year as in socials for freshers and sports days to compete with other departments. I鈥檓 looking forward to a great year with all of you guys!
