Professor Suzy Farid led the department’s involvement in an application for a new Horizon2020 Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) on Continuous Downstream Processing of Bioproducts (CODOBIO).Ìý

CODOBIO is a €4m collaboration that brings together Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and multiple European academic and industrial partners to train early career researchers to doctorate level.Ìý

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Biochemical Engineering will provide expertise in bioprocess economics and optimisation (Prof Suzy Farid), chemometrics (Prof Suzy Farid, Dr Stephen Goldrick) and fluid mechanics with advanced optical techniques and microscale methods (Dr Martina Micheletti).

The goal of CODOBIO is to deliver an innovation-driven training and research programme that addresses urgent questions in continuous downstream processing. These include: process control including economic and environmental modelling, process analytical technologies (PAT), predictive models for process control, miniaturization, scale-up and scale-down of unit operations and process design and development of integrated continuous downstream processes.Ìý

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’s Department of Biochemical Engineering is a world leader in bioprocess research for the healthcare sector and the largest centre in the UK. The department has continuously invested >£30m in new facilities to maintain a world-class research and training environment. Suzy Farid is Professor of Bioprocess Systems Engineering at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø, Co-Director of the EPSRC-funded Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub and Director of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø-MedImmune Centre of Excellence. She leads research on novel software-based ‘Bioprocess Decisional Tools’ to plan the best route to manufacture of new biotherapeutic candidates.Ìý
