Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø recently announced the opening of a new department focussed on the interface between science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM) and policy, as well as an associated interdisciplinary research institute, in September 2013.

The creation of the department was championed from within the BEAMS school by the deans of its three constituent faculties: The Bartlett, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Engineering and Maths and Physical Sciences.  The department will sit within the faculty of Engineering, but The Bartlett will play an active role in its development.

Prof Alan Penn, Dean of The Bartlett, explained: “The Bartlett is fully committed to the development of a Science and Technology policy unit at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø. This will build on the strength of policy research and impact already being delivered by the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Energy Institute, the Institute for Sustainable Resources, The Bartlett School of Planning and that of Construction and Project Management, as well at the Development Planning Unit. We look forward to working closely with colleagues in the Faculties of Engineering Science and Mathematics and Physical Science to help bring this about."

This major investment in a new Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø department will provide a home for existing engagement with policy across the university, as well as presenting an opportunity for significant expansion in this area.

The announcement has coincided with the creation of a new Policy Officer role within The Bartlett. The remit of the Policy Officer will be to act as a link between policy-makers and researchers at The Bartlett. Once appointed they will work to identify research needs of policy-makers and match them to our researchers and to inform policy-makers of the range of excellent research carried out at The Bartlett, showcasing this through events and policy briefings.
