Interactive media installation 鈥楽entiment Cocoon鈥 wins prestigious award

10 June 2016

Sentiment Cocoon

Associated聽VEIV and PhD聽candidate at The Bartlett School of Architecture, Moritz Behrens, is part of the聽Berlin-London-based architecture and design team behind the Sentiment Cocoon.

The Sentiment Cocoon won a prestigious international award for Media Architecture in the聽category Participatory Architecture & Urban Interaction for its interactive聽media installation. The 鈥楽entiment Cocoon鈥 is a physical architectural structure聽that uses a state of the art interactive lighting system to reflect the moods of聽people who engage with it.

The Media Architecture Awards are biannually given to outstanding projects at聽the intersection of architecture, media and interaction design. The 2016 award聽ceremony took place on a cruise during the Media Architecture Biennale in the聽vicinity of the Opera House in Sydney, AUS.

鈥淭his award appreciates our continuous strive to push the boundaries of future聽architecture,鈥 says Moritz Behrens (architect). 鈥淭he focus is on the exploration聽of architectural form through digital fabrication, with translucent materials and聽responsive lighting to facilitate social interactions. Ultimately, the installation聽turns its surroundings into a stage for social encounter through interaction and聽observation.鈥

鈥淭he lighting design creates an enigmatic display,鈥 says Konstantinos聽Mavromichalis (lighting designer). 鈥淣atural daylight, from the atrium skylights聽above, blend with the light emitted from the cocoon鈥檚 spine. This allows for聽rich interactions of varying forms of light and, through the translucency of聽the material, results in a striking visual display that has been informed by the聽feelings of the building鈥檚 occupants.鈥

The Sentiment Cocoon is a temporary interactive installation designed by聽architect Moritz Behrens and lighting designer Konstantinos Mavromichalis聽for Arup鈥檚 headquarters in London that seeks to capture and express human聽sentiment through the medium of light. Simple interfaces allow participants to聽express in the public domain how they feel by how they touch. These interactions聽are then transformed into pulses of light that travel throughout the cocoon.

The system architecture of the artwork allows for the tracking and displaying聽of several behaviours. Individual swipe cards such as the London Oyster card聽enable participants to express how they feel based upon three categories related聽to workplace wellbeing. These parameters are encoded into lighting patterns聽that suggest the collective mood of participants. The sentiments are encoded in聽different colours and movement. Colour gradients, velocity and movement are聽represented through patterns. Over time, the patterns become recognisable as聽the overriding sentiment of the day.

The suspended structure measures 20m high and 1.4 to 3.5m wide. The 20m聽tubular PVC interior core is segmented by plywood disks at 1m intervals. Each聽plywood disk has 10 protruding spokes creating 210 intersection points that are聽connected with steel cable creating a rhombic pattern and a complete structural聽system. The Pixel RGB LED system is comprised of four 400 node, 30 degree聽outward projecting continuous LED strands anchored to the core of the cocoon.聽Supplied by a 12 VDC power pack and Artnet control unit, the projected light聽passes through a special lenticular diffusion membrane before landing the聽partially translucent skin of the Cocoon itself.

The cocoon was operated 24/7 for 13 weeks in total. About 1,880 smart card聽interactions on six dashboards were logged in total. Participants actively engaged聽mainly on the way to their desks in the morning, during lunch time or in the聽late afternoon. Others simply enjoyed watching the colourful and dynamic聽visualisations. During events like Arup鈥檚 summer party, interaction peaks were聽noted.

In their work Moritz Behrens and Konstantinos Mavromichalis combine聽architecture and lighting design with interaction design to explore the聽notion of today鈥檚 architecture within mediated urban spaces. Recently and聽in collaboration with Arup, they designed and deployed the interactive聽鈥楽entiment Cocoon鈥, which collects the feelings of building occupants and聽visualises them through the medium of light evolving from a light-weight聽translucent structure. Amongst others their interactive media installations聽have been invited by 鈥榁erve Cultural鈥 (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and the EU聽funded 鈥楥onnecting Cities鈥 (Berlin, Germany), Nuit Blanche (Toronto,聽Canada) displayed at the 鈥楢rs Electronica Festival鈥 (Linz, Austria) and聽produced for the European Capital of Culture 2014 (Riga, Latvia) and for聽the VIVID Light Festival 2016 (Sydney, Australia).
