Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø-Energy student monitors workplace comfort for the National Bank of Abu Dhabi

Tia Kansara, a Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø-Energy PhD student, has been working closely with the National Bank of Abu Dhabi to monitor the air quality and comfort within their buildings.

From June to the end of September 2011, Tia worked with the bank’s Head Office, Academy and Khalidiya Branch measuring temperature, humidity and, in some cases, light levels.  A user satisfaction survey was also sent to all employees in these buildings to assess their comfort.

While the full analysis of the data is not yet complete the survey suggests that there are comfort challenges from temperature and humidity perspectives and employees would like light levels to be improved.  Information from the monitoring devices has brought up some interesting extremes in average temperatures within one month in the same areas, which requires further qualitative research to explain and resolve.

Further research will now be carried out including one to one occupant interviews, investigation of system operations and how more specific power consumption statistics can be obtained within buildings before a set of interventions are applied and further monitoring carried out during the summer.

As a result of Tia’s work with the bank, Abu Dhabi National Properties has engaged Tia to carry out the same research in a new building on Abu Dhabi Island.  This will be used to produce a proposal to upgrade the building systems to reduce the environmental impacts and costs whilst improving occupant comfort.
