Bartlett graduate given Honourable Mention in international sustainable design competition

Abdullah Al-Dabbous, who graduated last year聽from the MA Architecture and Historic Urban Environments (MAHUE) programme, has been given an Honourable Mention in聽the renowned S.Arch International Architecture聽Awards for projects (built or speculative)聽which promote聽sustainable design.

The Honourable Mention was for Abdullah鈥檚 MAHUE design thesis project,聽entitled 鈥楻evolution 4.0鈥.聽In it, he proposes strategic interventions into Cairo鈥檚 poorer neighbourhoods that can provide housing and employment for the large numbers of homeless聽street children there.

His design聽tutor, Professor Murray Fraser, notes: 鈥淎bdullah has created a remarkable project, based on precise sociological research and inventive design-and-build methods. It has聽enabled聽him to conceive new structures to be聽slotted in and around聽the elevated motorways in Cairo that have become, due to their age, an integral聽part of the city鈥檚 fabric. As such, his project shows the innovation and freshness of student聽investigations on the MAHUE programme, the only one of its kind in the world.鈥

The S.Arch Awards were judged in Hong Kong as part of the S.Arch International Architecture聽Conference, held聽7鈥9 June聽2017.聽Abdullah鈥檚 project was shortlisted from a聽range of submissions by聽leading international聽architects and university teams.
