An interdisciplinary panel (4 speakers), led by Daen Palma Huse and Caitlin French, will discuss the impact of language as a barrier to cultural exchange in the areas of academic research, teaching and visual arts practice. The panel will promote and advocate for comprehensive research strategies and will include personal experiences of navigating language barriers 鈥� traversing geographies and temporalities.听

The aim of the event is to promote a conscious approach to language in research and practice across a diverse range of cultural and lived experiences, particularly to support MA students in the HoA department as they approach their dissertation research and writing. Communication strategies will be explored through the impact of language barriers on accessible research material and practice. This virtual event will highlight socio-political implications of language as it pertains to multicultural study and will provide a platform for conversation between panellists and participants.

Panellists:

Sara Garc铆a Pel谩ez

Faculty of Philosophy & Classic Literature, UNAM, Mexico

Specialist in Latin, Ancient and Modern Geek and translator of Andr茅 Breton鈥檚 and Jean Schuster鈥檚 Art Po茅tique, as well as As茅tika and M茅gas Al茅xandros of Niko Kazantzaki, and The Magic Pillows of Evg茅nios Triviz谩s. Sara has lectured at UNAM as well as Universidad Panamericana. She has co-authored a manual of Greco-Latin etymology, has edited the volume 鈥淓xtreme Inequality in Mexico鈥� of Oxfam M茅xico, and prologued the most recent revision of one of the most important translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Sara coordinates the publication department of the CEEY (Centro de Estudios Espinosa Yglesias) and is representative in Mexico of the International Association of Friends of Niko Kazantzaki (SIANK).

Professor Daniel Brown

Emeritus Professor of English, University of Southampton, UK

Daniel works mainly on relations between poetry, philosophy and science. He is the author of two books on Gerard Manley Hopkins, and another entitled The Poetry of Victorian Scientists: Style, Science and Nonsense (CUP, 2013), along with various chapters and journal articles on writers including Thomas De Quincey, William Wordsworth, Edward Lear, Oscar Wilde, George Egerton, Thom Gunn, and the screen writer and director Billy Wilder. Currently, Daniel is finishing a monograph on the place of women in Victorian science as it is disclosed by poetry of the period.

Sharon Lloyd听

Senior Academic, Course Leader, FHEA, Solent University, UK

Sharon is Co-Founder of FACE, and Race and Equalities Advisor for Education Pillar with the British Beauty Council. Her role within both is in part to facilitate open and honest conversation about racial inequality and the shaping and broadening of academic language to challenge the barriers to an inclusive education.

G眉lnaz is a bilingual Arts Journalist and Writer (English and Turkish for The Guardian, Wall Street International Magazine) and broadcast journalist (CNN and Haber Global Turkey). She is also a Co-Founder and former Chair of GlobalGirlMedia UK.
