We are very pleased to announce thatÌýDr Sophie Brockmann will be joining the Institute of the Americas in September 2023 as Lecturer in Latin American History.

Dr Brockmann is a historian of modern Central America. Her work explores the relationship between humans and natureÌýfrom the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. SheÌýholds a PhD in History of Science from Cambridge. Her research has been funded by the Smithsonian Institution, the British Academy, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. She has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for 2023-4 for her project "Making National Heritage in Transnational Landscapes", which examines the history of archaeological sites in Guatemala in the context of the expansion of large-scale agriculture in the twentieth century.ÌýShe published her first monograph with Cambridge University Press in 2020,ÌýThe Science of Useful Nature in Central America: Landscapes, Networks and Practical Enlightenment, 1784–1838.

Dr Sophie Brockmann comes to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Institute of the Americas after academic appointments at the University of Pennsylvania, Senate House University of London, and De Montfort University.ÌýAt Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Americas, she will be facilitating modules at UG and PGT levels on themes such as environmental history, history of science, and Central American history.
