Staff engagement survey

Principal theme: Valuing our staff

Our latest staff engagement survey, released in March 2016, was very positive, indicating that we have a very committed and engaged workforce where:

  • 87% of staff say that they understand how their work contributes to the objectives of their department
  • 84% of staff feel that their work gives them a sense of personal accomplishment
  • 84% told us that they understand how their work contributes to the success of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø as a whole
  • 80% say that they are proud to work for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø.

Professor Michael Arthur (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø President & Provost)

The results also reflected our considerable efforts to deliver on our commitments to equality and diversity:

  • 82% of staff say that Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø respects individual differences
  • 80% believe that Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø is committed to advancing equal opportunities.

Our most significant improvement since the 2013 survey related to the question ‘my good performance is recognised appropriately’, with positive responses up by 19%. This is why we have recently introduced the Provost’s Excellence Scheme to recognise truly exceptional contributions from across Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø, with a particular emphasis on furthering Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø values.

There are, however, a few areas where we need to improve including:

  • work on the grading process
  • acting in an environmentally sustainable way
  • giving sufficient priority to infrastructure and systems.

The good news is that we have already started to make some progress in these areas. We are taking significant steps to invest in the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø estate and other infrastructure, including L, and in our new to ensure that our IT systems continue to support the changing needs of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø.

The most positive response of any question in the survey indicates that staff feel that they have a choice when deciding how to do their work, as long as it gets done.
