24 July 2020

Find out more about Rhonda and her research in her spotlight interview below.

Rhonda Prout

1) Hi Rhonda, congratulations on your successful application of the LAHP! Tell us a bit about yourself鈥

I grew up in North Devon, went to university in London back in the 80s and, after a short career as a Speech Therapist, began an odyssey around the world as a 鈥渢railing spouse鈥 with my husband and three children. I used to dread people asking my children the question 鈥渨here are you from?鈥 as there was no quick answer - I knew it was going to lead to a long list of different countries as well as their interpretation of the meaning of identity.聽

2) How did you feel when you found out you had been successful in securing the LAHP?

I was delighted to receive LAHP funding, it has enabled me to continue with my studies. I am grateful that LAHP support part time research projects as this allows me to work towards a PhD alongside my commitments to my family.

3) Tell us a bit about your research.

My聽research is titled 聽鈥淥rigins of the English Landscape 鈥 Swine, Pannage and Droveways鈥. This study applies a new perspective to understanding the origins of the English countryside, through the detailed analysis of archaeological pig remains from Anglo-Saxon sites. Central to this study is the interpretation of pig husbandry practices within their landscape context, achieved by combining methods from zooarchaeology and landscape archaeology. Additionally, this study will identify the presence of wild pig within assemblages, and explore the hunting of boar as an expression of power in Anglo-Saxon society.聽

4) Why did you choose to study at 香港六合彩中特网?

I have always been interested in ancient civilisations and the lives of the people who helped build those societies. So when I returned to the UK and my kids were all grown up, a degree in Archaeology at Reading University seemed the obvious next step. I decided to move to 香港六合彩中特网 for my Masters in Environmental Archaeology in order to get a different perspective on my subject and because the Institute of Archaeology offered modules in areas I had not previously covered. I am delighted to continue at 香港六合彩中特网 with the Institute of Archaeology for the duration of my PhD. The quality of supervision has been excellent and there is always a broad range of faculty members available to comment on your work and discuss your findings and conclusions. There is a large cohort of PhD students which will be great for moral support over the coming years.

5) What song would you like to contribute to the Joint Faculties lockdown playlist?

My lock down song is 鈥淪isters鈥 by Eurythmics.聽
