Sheriff Lanarkshire1834 - ???? Income of 拢1400 a year from the post. According to the OxfordDNB, "Alison vigorously upheld the authority of the state", especially against trade unions and Chartism. He pursued very repressive measures against them, especially in 1837-38. It is claimed that he all but strangled Scottish trade unionism at birth, [though this claim is doubtful]. 聽He also took severe measures against Chartism.
