Resident slave-owner.

  1. The will of Edward Hicks of County of Berbice British Guiana, proved 31/05/1853, describes him as 'born in England but for upwards of 30 years a resident of the County of Berbice'. He requested to be buried next to Jane Adair mother of four of my children, and left an annuity of 500 dollars to Caroline McAndrew mother of two more of his children. He left the remainder of his estate to his natural children, Caroline, Margaret, Thomas and Jane at school in England and Amelia and Edward in Berbice.

  2. In 1851, Caroline Eliz. Hicks (aged 16), Margaret Hicks (14) and Jane Adair Hicks (9) are identifiable as visitors at 4 Bond Street Clerkenwell, all 'scholars' born Berbice. In 1861 Amelia Hicks aged 14 born Berbice was a pupil at Highbury Place Islington.
