Biography

  1. Son of William James and his wife Frances nee Haughton. Died in 1774, buried in Hanover.

  2. The will of Charles James of Hanover, Esq. was proved in Jamaica 16/04/1774. His residuary legatees were his wife and their children but he also manumitted his "negro" enslaved person named Pamela and her "mulatto" daughter Elizabeth and bequeathed them each 拢20 Jamaican currency per year for life.

  3. Charles James of Hanover, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1774. Slave-ownership at probate: 172 of whom 100 were listed as male and 72 as female. 64 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: 拢15064.64 Jamaican currency of which 拢11975 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included 拢0 currency cash, 拢437.25 currency debts and 拢0 currency plate.
