James Edward Merrifield

Biography

Slave-owner on Dominica, purchasing the Mount Joy estate in 1821 and selling or transferring it between 1829 and 1832. He appears to be unconnected with the man of the same name 'Clerk of the Register's Office' of Middlesex whose will was proved 16/03/1845. Frances Merrifield, widow, was awarded compensation for five enslaved people in Dominica, and might have been connected with the man in this entry. A Richard Merrifield was the present proprietor c. 1773 of St Peter Lots. Nos. 1 and 2 in Dominica (285 acres), originally bought by William Buckley and Henry Byrne.
