"Lost, John. Son of Stephen Lost of Jamaica. School, Harrow (Dr Thackeray). Age 17. Pensioner, December 31, 1756. Tutor, Mr Backhouse. [Matriculated, 1757. Re-admitted as a Fellow-Commoner, January 14, 1758. Did not graduate.]"
In 1756, A Private Act of the Jamaica Assembly was passed to 'intitle' John, Stephen, Elizabeth, Richard and Robert, the reputed sons and daughter of Stephen Lost merchant of St Catherine 'by Mary Ricketts, a free mulatto woman, deceased' to the same rights and privileges 'with English subjects, born of white parents.'

Slave-ownership at probate: 312 of whom 154 were listed as male and 158 as female. 92 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: 拢16858.61 Jamaican currency of which 拢10767 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included 拢0 currency cash, 拢4381.14 currency debts and 拢2.5 currency plate.
