Biography

London merchant, creditor of D.H. Rucker & Co., in which capacity he claimed the compensation for the Sharpe's and Petit Bordels estate on St Vincent, having taken in 1831 the mortgage deeds over the estates as security for a 拢7000 loan to the Ruckers, who were mortgagees of Michael White senior.

  1. Will of William Cooke otherwise William Hodges of Old Broad Street proved 04/01/1842. In the will, made in 1822, he said that his estate was worth 拢36,000 or 拢38,000, and left legacies on a sliding scale to his two sisters Maria Hodges and Elizabeth Jackson from 拢500 (if his gross estate was 拢30,000) to 拢2000 each (if his estate was 拢48,000 or more). He left annuities of 拢80 p.a., 拢50 p.a. and 拢25 p.a. to uncles and aunts (all surnamed Jackson). He left the remainder of his estate to his wife Sarah Frances Hodges, and in a codicil provided for the estate to be divided between his two sisters, his nephews (surnamed Cumberleye) and aunts and uncles, should his wife die at the same time as him or intestate. The probate gives him as late of Old Broad Street and of 15 Cumberland Terrace.

  2. His wife Sarah Frances Hodges left monetary legacies of 拢5000 each to four relatives as well as other smaller monetary legacies to family and friends and servants, and annuities of 拢25 for her two horses. Her residuary legatees were some dozen philanthropic bodies, including London hospitals and church charities.
