Claim Details

Claim Notes

Parliamentary Papers p. 61.

T71/871: claim from Charles Chatfield and William Cruttendon, as trustees of Matthew Gregory Lewis (deceased), by their attorney Wm. Ridgard. Counterclaim from John Sheddon [sic], entitled to one fourth of 拢5000 under certain order and reports made in Lushington versus Sewell in the English Chancery. Charles Chatfield and William Cruttendon admitted claim for 拢1250 plus interest from 30/04/1835 at 4%. Therefore: 拢1271 2s 2d went to John Shedden; 拢3020 15s 4d went to the trustees (thus the amount shown in Parliamentary Papers (拢3020 15s 4d) is wrong: the claim should total 拢4291 17s 6d).

Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) pp. lx-lxi: no ownership identified. This was Monk Lewis's estate; (Dame Fanny) Lushington was his sister. See also St Thomas in the East claim no. 94 for Lewis's Hordley estate.

Possibly the same Charles Chatfield as the London lawyer in Antigua claim no. 390?
